Summer Staff Opportunities at Woodcrest Retreat

Day and resident camps for children ages 6-15 are held at Woodcrest Retreat from mid-June through mid-August. Our summer camp staff members are vital to the summer camp ministry, they represent Jesus to the children at camp. We are looking for energetic Christians who desire to share their faith in word and deed as they serve in various roles in an outdoor setting. We also search for individuals who display solid character and are fun-loving, genuine, understanding, and full of love. Individual must be a committed Christian, active in their church, growing in faith and in agreement with our faith statement.

Paid Positions

Overnight Camp Director

Provides direction and oversight of residential camp staff, schedules, and activities. Director must possess strong organization and relational skills, proficient computer skills, familiar with Microsoft Office, be outgoing, creative, take initiative, and have an attitude of service. Responsible to the summer camp director. Past camp counseling experience necessary. This is a 10 week position. The weeks spent on duty will be a resident position including meals & lodging. Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day, per 7 day period.

Day Camp Director

Position requirements:
Provide direction and oversight of day camp staff, schedules, and activities. Director must possess strong organization and relational skills, proficient computer skills, familiar with Microsoft Office, be outgoing, creative, eager to take initiative, and have an attitude of service. Responsible to the summer camp director. Preferably 20 or older. Past counseling experience necessary. This is a 10 week position. The remaining weeks will be a resident position including meals & lodging or a drive-in position. Position will include serving Sunday Evening. Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day, per 7 day period.

Trekkers Day Camp Leader (2)

Position requirements:
Provide direction and oversight of Trekkers day camp.Counselor must possess strong organization and relational skills, proficient computer skills, familiar with Microsoft Office, be outgoing, creative, take initiative, and have an attitude of service. Lead campers through and participate in daily camp activities, including singing, devotions, crafts, nature, and recreation, and off site trips. Counselors must possess a solid understanding of the Bible, confidence leading a group, flexibility, strong relational skills and lots of enthusiasm. Responsible to the program director. This is an 9 week resident position including meals & lodging or a drive-in position. Will include serving Sunday Evening. Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day, per 7 day period.

Snack Bar Manager

Duties include providing leadership & management to camp sales at the camp store, the snack bar and canteen. Individual must possess strong organization and relational and time management skills, proficient computer skills, be outgoing, flexible, creative, take initiative, and have an attitude of service. The snack bar manager will also be asked to jump in and help out in other areas around camp. They would serve as support staff during evening activities and then serve as the second staff person in a bunkhouse overnight. There may be some weekend hours at a per hour rate. Responsible to the summer camp director. This is a 9 week resident position including meals & lodging or a drive-in position.Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day, per 7 day period.

Worship Leader / Prayer Coordinator

The primary responsibilities of the Worship Leader are to lead worship for summer camp programs, both day and overnight, and staff meetings. The worship leader is expected to lead by singing and playing an instrument. Leading with a guitar is typical but other possibilities would be considered. When leading this person is to utilize the repertoire of ‘camp’ songs familiar to Woodcrest and to incorporate contemporary praise and worship songs. The worship times are to be age appropriate, accessible, encourage participation and in accordance with Woodcrest’s faith statement. Since the Worship Leader is a support staff role this person does not have counselor responsibilities as a primary function. However, working directly with campers is an important and integral part of this position. Applicants need to be spiritually mature, have proficient computer skills, and practice good communication and organizational skills. This is typically a resident position but other arrangements could be considered if necessary.  When not performing worship leading responsibilities this person may be assigned a variety of duties to assist in the operation of camp program as identified and directed by camp leadership. This will likely include being the ‘second staff’ person with cabin groups at their bunkhouse overnight. The Worship Leader also encourages prayer among the summer staff by coordinating prayer partners. (All resident positions include meals & lodging.) All duties occur during the camp week that goes from Sunday evening until Friday evening. Along with other summer staff the Worship Leader is off duty between Friday evening (following staff meeting) and Sunday evening until staff meeting with the exception of the rotational weekend responsibilities. Support Staff Services (2)

Support Services Desires to serve the Lord by providing support and assistance to all programs. Responsibilities may include assisting nature and craft instructor, helping to lead games, camper registration, cleaning and maintaining bathrooms, challenge course elements, camp store, running the water slide, serving as photographer, and encouragement to all staff and counselors. Individual must be outgoing, flexible, creative, take initiative, and have an attitude of service. You would serve as support staff during evening activities and then serve as the second staff person in a bunkhouse overnight. Responsible to the summer camp director. Preferably 18 or older. This is a 9 1/2- week resident position including meals & lodging. General time off is Fri. 8:00 pm thru Sun. 6:00 pm.

Food Service Directors

Plan and prepare meals for up to 240 campers and staff each day. Coordinates volunteer kitchen staff and food purchasing and kitchen clean up. Should enjoy working with a team of people; possess a positive work ethic, and a servant’s heart. Experience in a working kitchen is preferred.

Health Care Director (Overnight)

Manage the health care of up to 100 campers and staff per week. Reviews health forms at camper registration, communicates with parents according to health related concerns, follows doctors orders in providing medication, evaluates and treats minor injuries, calls for professional help in major injury, promotes and encourages the health and safety of staff and campers. Keeps accurate records of all health related information. Nursing students or those with similar or more training are welcome to apply. May also include additional responsibilities. This resident position includes meals & lodging. Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day per 7 day period.

Nature Instructor

Desires to serve through creative teaching and leading discovery and exploration of nature. Emphasizes what we can learn about our Creator through His creation. Plans and teaches a daily lesson for campers. Individual must possess strong organization and relational and time management skills, be outgoing, flexible, creative, take initiative, and have an attitude of service. May also include additional responsibilities. This is resident position that includes meals & lodging. You may also serve as support staff during evening activities and then serve as the second staff person in a bunkhouse overnight. Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day, per 7 day period.

Videographer / Digital Media Producer

Produce weekly camp videos to be shown at the end of camp parent’s program and for purchase by parents. Responsible for creating a camp video for each program. Oversee all videotaping, editing, duplicating and distributing responsibilities. Requires a high level of creativity and self-motivation. Applicants should have good computer skills and organizational abilities as well as a willingness to serve in other areas of camp as needed. Video, photography and digital video editing experience necessary. May also include additional responsibilities. Knowledge of Apple computers & Final Cut Express software preferred. This is a resident position including meals & lodging. Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day, per 7 day period.

Arts & Crafts Director

Responsibilities include coordinating the arts and crafts projects, classes, selecting and planning projects, ordering supplies and organizing creative hands on experiences for summer campers. Requires a high level of creativity and self-motivation. Applicants should work well leading others; have creative skills, organizational abilities, as well as a willingness to serve in other areas of camp as needed. Art or creative experience preferred. May include additional responsibilities. This position can be either a resident position including meals & lodging or a drive-in position.Will include serving Sunday Evenings. As a resident position you would serve as support staff during evening activities and then serve as the second staff person in a bunkhouse overnight. Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day per, 7 day period.

Overnight Camp Lead Counselors (2)

Desires to serve the Lord through leading and caring for a group of 7-9 campers and encouraging other staff. Counselors will live with campers in Adirondack style bunkhouses, cook 1-2 meals a day over a fire, lead Bible discussions, pray with and for campers and lead and participate in daily camp activities. Counselors must possess a solid understanding of the Bible, strong relational skills and lots of enthusiasm. In addition, this person serves as the first level of oversight and leadership to the same gender of counselors. Position may include serving as day counselor or support staff one or multiple weeks. Will be involved in camper follow-up after camp. This person should have strong interpersonal relationship skills with all ages. Preferably 18 or older. Previous counseling experience preferred. This is a resident position including meals & lodging. Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day, per 7 day period.

Overnight Camp Counselors (6)

Overnight counselors serve by leading, teaching, and caring for a group of 7-9 campers. Counselors will live with campers in Adirondack style bunkhouses, cook 1-2 meals a day over a fire, lead Bible discussions, pray with and for campers and lead and participate in daily camp activities. Counselors must possess a solid understanding of the Bible, strong relational skills and lots of enthusiasm. Position may include serving as day counselor or support staff one or multiple weeks. Will be involved in camper follow-up after camp. Preferably 18 or older. Overnight Counselors are responsible to Overnight Camp Lead Counselors. This is a resident position including meals & lodging. Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day, per 7 day period.

Day Camp Counselors (12)

Day camp counselors serve through leading, teaching, and caring for a group of 7-9 campers. Day Camp Counselors will lead campers through and participate in daily camp activities, including singing, Bible, crafts, nature, and recreation. Daily commitment approx. 7:30 am-5:00 pm. Counselors must possess a solid understanding of the Bible, strong relational skills and lots of enthusiasm. Preferably 16 or older. This is a drive-in position including lunch. Will include serving Sunday evening each week, General serving time commitment is Sun. evening 6 pm-10:00 pm. Mon. 7:00 am – 5:30 pm and Tues.-Fri. 8:30 am-4:30 pm. (Lodging available for Sunday night) It will also include a weekly rotation of before & after care either 7-9 am or 4:00-5:30 pm.

In addition you may also apply to be overnight support staff for the full summer. You would serve as support staff during evening activities and then serve as the second staff person in a bunkhouse overnight. Eight positions available. Time off is a minimum of a 24 hour day, per 7 day period.

Lifeguard Director

Provide direction and oversight to the camp swimming pool area and water slide at Woodcrest Retreat. Director must possess strong organization and relational skills, be outgoing, creative, take initiative, and have an attitude of service. Responsible to the program director. Preferably 18 or older. This is a drive-in position or possibly a resident position including lodging and meals. Pool is open Monday – Sunday. Average 35 – 40 hours a week, typical work time frame from 12 PM – 7PM. Schedules vary from week to week and will include weekend and some evening hours. Position available Mid May – Labor Day

Lifeguards (10)

Provide direction and oversight to the camp swimming pool area at Woodcrest Retreat. Lifeguards must possess strong organization and relational skills, be outgoing, creative, professionally minded, take initiative, and have an attitude of service. Responsible to the Lifeguard Director (Head Lifeguard). Preferably 16 or older. This is a drive in position or possibly a resident position with lodging and meals. Pool is open Monday – Sunday. Average 10 – 35 hours a week, typical work time frame from 12 PM – 7PM. Schedules vary from week to week and will include weekend and some evening hours. Position available Memorial Day – Labor Day.

Resident Lifeguards (3)

The Resident Lifeguard is a support staff position that focuses on, but not limited to, the pool and water slide related activities. They are to ensure safety of the camper and patrons according to their lifeguard training. As a part of the summer camp support staff team this position has the responsibility of taking direction from the Head Lifeguard, or other directors and administrators to do a variety of tasks for the purpose of helping the various summer camp programs and facilitators accomplish their purposes. Similar to other summer staff, Resident Lifeguards duty spans from Sunday evening through Friday evening, with some rotational responsibilities on the weekends. They would serve as support staff during evening activities and then serve as the second staff person in a bunkhouse overnight. (Resident Lifeguards are paid hourly when working outside of the programmed camp week.) Resident Lifeguards also have the responsibility of positively contributing to the spiritual atmosphere of summer camp by encouraging their fellow staff and campers in both word and deed. It is also our hope that anyone serving in this role will be encouraged and built up in the unique way that serving as part of a ministry team can provide.

Volunteer Positions

Volunteer Craft Assistant – Day Camps

Individual assists the Craft Instructor in craft time sessions. Offers support, helps teach campers the craft, emphasizes new skill development and encourages opportunities for campers to be creative. Assist in morning craft classes each day, Mon-Fri. Each class includes approx. 25-35 campers and staff. Works with craft instructor and Program Director concerning project ideas. Desires to implement scriptural themes into craft projects when possible.

Volunteer Adventure Trip Leader

Individual desires to serve the Lord through planning and leading adventure trips. May involve some or all of the following: planning the trip menus, purchasing food. Loading, unloading, cleanup of gear, and spiritual input / devotions, normally each morning & evening, during the trip. Leaders will have experience with the particular type of adventure that they’ll be leading (canoeing, backpacking, rock climbing, etc.) Leaders must also possess a solid understanding of the Bible, strong relational skills and lots of enthusiasm. Preferably 21 or older. Time varies according to the particular adventure, typically the trip time, plus planning, packing, and clean-up time.

Volunteer Nature Assistant

Individual desires to serve the Lord through assisting the nature instructor in teaching groups of campers, and in feeding, caring for and displaying a variety of species in the camp’s Nature Shack. Responsibilities include cleaning pens and tanks, feeding, care of animals. Hours vary. 15 or older.

Volunteer Day Camp Counselors

Volunteer for one or more weeks! This individual will serve by leading and caring for a group of 7-9 campers. Counselor’s duties include leading the group through the scheduled activities of the day, participating in camp activities, encouraging campers in participation, teamwork and safety, connecting with campers throughout the week, and encouraging Spiritual growth. Counselors must possess a solid understanding of the Bible, strong relational skills and lots of enthusiasm. Preferably 16 or older. (Sunday night staff meeting and Mon–Fri. 8am – 4:30 pm)

Kitchen

During the summer months, many volunteers are needed to assist in preparing and serving meals to the summer campers. Place your name on the call as needed list and then volunteer as available. Time commitment is from approx 10 to 2.

You would be assisting in the preparation and serving of meals for up to 240 campers and staff per week.

Volunteer Maintenance

Assist in maintaining buildings and grounds under the supervision of the maintenance director. Should enjoy working with hands; possess a positive work ethic, and a servant’s heart. Hours vary by day or week as scheduled with Facility Director. Preferably 15 or older.

Volunteer Camp Speaker – Overnight Camps

Assist by sharing at evening firesides of 80-100 campers and staff. Works closely with Program Director concerning teaching focus. Desires to be a support to counselors in helping campers to begin or strengthen and grow in their relationships with God through Jesus Christ. Mon.-Fri. evenings.

R.I.S.E. is designed for teenagers who want to be a part of Woodcrest but cannot yet work on summer staff. Because the emphasis of the program is on developing future staff, R.I.S.E. is designed to be fun, challenging and give the participants a taste of what it’s like to work in summer camp ministry. For example, R.I.S.E. participants will serve alongside camp staff doing daily activities through shadowing day camp counselors, serving in the kitchen, and grounds maintenance. Also, they will grow by participating in team building exercises, learning camp leadership skills and exploring God’s Word. Also, we shouldn’t forget that they will have a great time going on adventurous outdoor excursions and enjoying classic camp fun! Don’t wait to sign up because space is limited and admittance is not guaranteed.

Program Dates: June 26-30 & July 3-7, 2017

This overnight program is a single session that is two weeks in length, excluding the weekend. Participants must attend both weeks.
